Deep breaths mama, you've got this!
Yes, mama.. you heard correctly. We’re throwing it back to April 2017 and you’re hungover in bed on a Sunday afternoon, lazily perusing houses on Rightmove and considering which takeaway to get for tea. You’re kind of but not really regretting the tequilas and 4am cheesy chips and gravy. You’ve just started a brand new job and you’re heading off to Spain in June for a ‘girls weekend’. Ok, enjoy it, this bit, take it all in because let me tell you MAMA, your whole life is about to change.
You’re in shock aren’t you, well not quite as much as you will be when you take the 4am pregnancy test en-route home from the airport on June 28th. It’s positive FYI, just in case you hadn’t guessed. Yep, hi there mama, shit is about to get serious!
You’re questioning everything, you’re almost 29 years old but you’re not ready, neither of you are ready, you can’t do this, you’ve just started your new job, you don’t even have a house yet...
Deep breaths mama, you’ve got this! Prepare yourself.
Ok so you and pregnancy ain’t so hot. You’re going to throw up A LOT. You’re going to get what feels like a million and one water infections, oh and that tiny little babe in there is going to throw you a curveball at 34weeks... I won’t ruin the surprise but it’s a bloody good one!
You fully commit to all the relaxation classes, the hypnobirthing course, the water birth dream... sorry mama, it doesn’t quite work out that way and those first few weeks are pretty hellish in your recovery.
But.. and here’s the big BUT, you’re about to surprise yourself (and everyone else too). Little miss ‘non maternal, pass the gin, 5am is an adequate home time’ is about to become a bloody good mama if I do say so myself. That tiny little babe is now almost 11 weeks old and thriving, yes, you (along with G) have created and are bringing up a real life human and you’re doing incredible. What’s more, you love it. Your mat leave is a joy. You even have your own little group of mum friends... again, I won’t ruin the surprise but watch out for some pretty awesome baby announcements around October and December time!
I know you’re panicking about everything, money, job, life... it all works itself out. You do have to leave your job but never fear, you crack on and temp your way through to Feb. You have the most amazing support network and you and Roo want for nothing by the time he arrives. So deep breaths and head up mama, because I promise you’ve got this. Now go pour yourself a large gin while you can.
